Description

The timber used in this piece was salvaged from an iconic botanic garden in Victoria, established in the 1840s. Planted by Baron Ferdinand von Mueller, 'Monterey' is a Californian variant of Cypress tree—prized for its aromatic qualities and natural resistance to moisture. The timber's inherent antimicrobial properties make it perfectly suited for the humid bath environment, and its raw unfinished surface celebrates the wood's authentic character and grain.

Each stool is lovingly handcrafted in our Brunswick workshop, where traditional techniques meet contemporary design sensibilities. The result is a piece that honours both the Japanese bathing ritual and the exceptional quality and origin of the cypress it is made from—a stool that will age gracefully over time, developing its own unique patina.

What is an onsen stool?

In Japanese onsen culture, the humble bath stool serves an essential role in the cleansing ritual. Bathers sit upon these low stools whilst washing thoroughly before entering the communal hot spring waters—a practice that ensures respect for both the space and fellow bathers. This mindful preparation is integral to the onsen experience.

Whether used for its traditional bathing purpose or as an elegant display stand for treasured objects, this cypress stool brings a touch of Japanese serenity to any space.

Simple, honest design

Our stool is a modern take on a traditional everyday object. Like the originals, it's assembled using tight-fitting joints without glue or fasteners—just careful craftsmanship and materials that are right for the job. There's something appealing about this straightforward approach—choose good materials, use what works, nothing more. The compact size is deliberate, designed to fit neatly in your space while giving you a comfortable seat.

In Japan, these stools are traditionally made from Hinoki (Japanese Cypress), valued for its durability and pleasant scent. We offer our stool in both authentic Hinoki imported from Japan, and the historic 'Von Mueller' Cypress salvaged locally from the iconic gardens where they were planted. Two beautiful timbers, each with their own story.

Whether used for bathing or as an elegant display stand, this cypress stool brings a touch of Japanese serenity to any space.

Natural, raw, and unfinished

The onsen stool is intentionally left raw and unfinished. Cypress naturally absorbs and releases moisture without rotting or harbouring bacteria, making it ideal for humid environments. The unfinished surface lets the wood breathe freely, regulating moisture while its antimicrobial properties keep the surface clean and hygienic over time.
